A day after Paul Maurice was fired as head coach, the Toronto Maple Leafs are stepping up their search for a new general manager.
Sources tell TSN the Leafs have officially made contact with former Vancouver Canucks general manager Dave Nonis in an effort to move the process along. It's expected the two sides will meet next week.
Sources also tell TSN the Maple Leafs contacted the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday for permission to talk to Sharks' GM Doug Wilson. But sources say Sharks' ownership refused to grant that permi

When Cliff Fletcher took over the GM responsibilities from John Ferguson Jr., he promised there would be changes to the organization. Those changes began today.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have fired coach Paul Maurice.
Maurice had one year remaining on his original three-year contract.
The Maple Leafs have called a news conference for 3pm et/Noon pt today. Maurice will meet the media Thursday morning at 10:30am et/7:30 am pt at the ACC.

Even without captain Mats Sundin, the Toronto Maple Leafs are still alive in the playoff chase.
Vesa Toskala stopped 35 shots, and Matt Stajan had a goal, an assist and prevented a goal by blocking Ales Kotalik's shot headed for a wide-open net, in a 4-1 win over the perplexing Buffalo Sabres on Friday night.
"Everybody's written us off when we lost Mats," Stajan said, referring to Sundin, who missed his third straight game with a groin injury. "We're not going to die in here. We're going to keep going until it's over.

There is no help on the horizon for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Coach Paul Maurice says that Mats Sundin and Nik Antropov will both miss Toronto's game in Long Island on Tuesday because of injuries.
They are the team's top two scorers.
Sundin sat out Saturday's game against the Buffalo Sabres after suffering a groin strain last week and has been listed as day to day.
Toronto plays at Buffalo on Friday and Ottawa on Saturday.

The Toronto chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association has chosen left winger Jason Blake as its nominee for the 2008 Bill Masterton Trophy, awarded for ‘perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey’.
