Sports Network) - Off to their best start in franchise history, the New York Rangers head north this evening to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre.

New York was last in action on Thursday, when it posted a 3-2 win over Atlanta. The victory was the Rangers' 10th of the season in 13 games and gave them a league-best 21 points (10-2-1).

The Rangers' run to open the year eclipsed the franchise's previous best start, done by the 1983-84 team that went 9-4-0 to start that season. After posting its ninth win, that club went on to lose three straight before notching back-to-back ties.

Nikolai Zherdev and Markus Naslund both scored in Thursday's win, while Daniel Girardi tallied the game-winning marker with 6:27 left in the contest. Paul Mara posted a pair of assists, and Henrik Lundqvist made 27 saves to improve his record to 8-2-1 on the season with a 1.99 goals against average.

Zherdev now has a point in four straight games (3 goals, 4 assists), while Naslund has found the scoresheet in five straight (3g, 4a).

The Rangers have yet to loss in regulation on the road this year, going 4-0-1.

Lundqvist is just 4-4-0 in eight career meetings with Toronto, and it was actually backup netminder Stephen Valiquette who was in net when the Rangers posted a 1-0 shootout win over the Maple Leafs on October 17.

It was Valiquette's third career shutout and also gave the Rangers a victory in four of their last six meetings with the Maple Leafs. New York has also won two straight in Toronto.

Toronto has won three of four and defeated New Jersey, 6-5, in a shootout on Wednesday. Niklas Hagman had the game-deciding tally in the extra session, slipping a backhander through Martin Brodeur's pads, while Vesa Toskala preserved the win with a blocker save on Jamie Langenbrunner.

Matt Stajan had two goals and an assist for the Maple Leafs. Alex Steen, Alexei Ponikarovsky and Jamal Mayers also lit the lamp and Toskala stopped 26 shots through overtime for the win.

Toronto is 1-2-2 as the home club this year.

Toskala stopped all 32 shots faced in Toronto's shootout loss to New York this year before getting beat twice in the extra session. He was still credited with his first shutout of the season and 12th of his career.
