The NHL is trying to crackdown on unnecessary blows to the head.
The NHL's Senior Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations, Colin Campbell, had the following memo, obtained by TSN, posted in every NHL dressing room on Friday.
"Recently, we have had two (2) supplemental discipline incidents involving direct elbow blows to the head. This is a play that we have been trying to remove from our game for a number of years. In one case there was no injury and in the other incident the elbowed Player received a concus

General managers will have one extra day to make NHL trades. The league said yesterday it has pushed the trade deadline back to March 4. A high volume of games forced the switch. There are 12 games on the schedule March 3 and only two March 4. The league and NHL Players' Association agreed on the change.

The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman Denis Grebeshkov to a one year, $1.5 million contract.
The Russian born blueliner enjoyed a solid first year in Edmonton with three goals and 15 assists in 71 games while posting a +2 rating. In 104 career games the 25-year old Grebeshkov has three goals and 21 assists.
Grebeshkov was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the first round (18th overall) of the 2002 NHL entry draft. He was acquired from the Islanders last season forMarc-Andre Bergeron and a 3rd round

The Edmonton Oilers have locked up defenceman Tom Gilbert and forward Robert Nilsson to multi-year deals.
Gilbert's new pact will pay him $24 million over six years, while Nilsson signed a three-year, $5.5 million contract.
Gilbert will earn $3.5 million next season with a $1.5 million signing bonus, $3.5 million in 2009-2010, $5.5 million with a $1.5 million signing bonus in 2010-2011, $5 million in 2011-2012, $3.5 million in 2012-2013, and $3 million in 2013-2014 for a salary cap average of $4 million a season.

The Edmonton Oilers have locked-up defenceman Tom Gilbert to a multi-year deal, TSN has learned.
It is a 6-year deal at approximately $4-million per season.
By signing the deal, Gilbert avoids restricted free agency. He could have been a target for a RFA offer.
The 25-year-old had a solid campaign for the Oilers in 2007/08 with 13 goals and 20 assists over his 82 games.
Gilbert was acquired by the Oilers in a 2004 deal with the Colorado Avalanche that sent Tommy Salo and a 6th Round Pick. He w
