    Oilers resign Gilbert
    TSN.ca said:
The Edmonton Oilers have locked-up defenceman Tom Gilbert to a multi-year deal, TSN has learned.

It is a 6-year deal at approximately $4-million per season.

By signing the deal, Gilbert avoids restricted free agency. He could have been a target for a RFA offer.

The 25-year-old had a solid campaign for the Oilers in 2007/08 with 13 goals and 20 assists over his 82 games.

Gilbert was acquired by the Oilers in a 2004 deal with the Colorado Avalanche that sent Tommy Salo and a 6th Round Pick. He was drafted by the Avalanche in the 4th round (129th overall) in 2002.

Edmonton now has a decision to make on Joni Pitkanen. The 24-year-old can become a restricted free agent and the Gilbert signing creates some doubt about the Oilers bringing him back.
